OTHER NAMES OF SRI LANKA
Sri Lanka has been referred to by several different names, given by several different countries.
Some of these have been listed below.
- Thambapanni - So called because of the reddish glow that is emanated from the sand. Vijaya,
when he first arrived on the island, noticed the near-copper-colour of the sand and gave it this name
- Taprobane - A name used by the Romans. Also used by the Egyptian geographer, Ptolemy.
- Serendib - Arabian traders used this name
- Seyllao, Ceilao, Ceylao - Names given to the island by the Portuguese
- Ceilon, Ceylon - Used by the Dutch
